Most Brits 'can't live without their broadband'

Friday 8th June 2007, by Daniel King

Nearly two-thirds of broadband users believe that they could not live without their high speed internet connections, a study has shown.

According to findings by Orange Broadband, 61 per cent of Britons could not live without the internet, with almost half of respondents stating that they spend three or more hours online each day.

Broadband customers in the north-east buy and sell more goods over the internet than anyone else in the country, while Londoners are the most likely to utilise social networking websites.

Almost a fifth of people in the north-west now turn to their computer to watch their favourite TV programmes, while almost two-thirds of south-west residents use their broadband connection to entertain themselves.

Asif Aziz, director of product management at Orange Broadband, said: "Ten years ago, few of us had fast home internet access or used it regularly, particularly for entertainment, so it's amazing to see how it has evolved to be a pastime as popular as watching TV."

Research by Vodafone UK recently discovered that a third of Britons would forfeit their human rights if it meant that they could stay online.
