Need for business broadband security highlighted

Monday 23rd June 2008, by Daniel King

Business broadband users could be exposing themselves to the threat of security lapses, according to research by Bell Micro.

It was revealed that many do not protect data assets and that 47 per cent think their company has yet to engage a system that would immediately inform IT departments in case of a breach of security.

Mobile devices, which could be used to access wireless internet connections, were also seen as a potential source of weakness as 43 per cent of businesses did not enforce a data encryption code on them.

General manager of Bell Micro's security division Steve Browell explained: "What these findings show is that there is still a paramount need to increase attention to data management and protection in an organisation."

In 2005, BT issued a warning about the need to protect devices when using mobile devices as fake hotspots were identified as a problem which could result in the interception of sensitive data, reported the BBC.
