Net speeds should be clearer, says BT

Thursday 13th March 2008, by Daniel King

BT Wholesale has called for greater clarity over net speeds within the broadband industry, reports the BBC.

It has been revealed that, due to issues involving line speed and throughput, just 15 per cent of consumers got the 8MB per second speed they had paid for.

Guy Bradshaw of BT Wholesale told the news provider: "The reality is if you are very far from an exchange or there are environmental factors then your speed will come down and there is not much we can do in the short term to address that problem."

The broadband supplier has said that users should be informed that they may not get the full speed of the package they buy if, for example, they live too far away from the exchange.

Ofcom are looking into the issue, ensuring that consumers can make an informed decision.

Meanwhile, BT has announced that Eric Daniels, group chief executive of LloydsTSB, and the Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt MP will join the BT board as non-executive directors.
