New broadband figures for Ireland released
Wednesday 18th June 2008, by Daniel King
It has been revealed that broadband take-up in Ireland had reached close to one million by the end of March, reports RTE Business.
The figures from communications regulator ComReg shows an increase of 12 per cent in the first three months of 2008, equalling an uptake of 22.9 per cent of the population.
Broadband on the move is also increasingly popular, with a surge in uptake of mobile broadband - which could help those looking to stay connected when away from their home internet.
During the first quarter of 2008, subscriptions to mobile broadband grew by 46 per cent to 186,000 customers.
Earlier in the year, the Irish Times reported that Vodafone was entering the Irish market and offering broadband services, as well as a new fixed-line deal which could be offered in a package to customers.
Chief executive officer of Vodafone Ireland Charles Butterworth explained that the move was an attempt to increase broadband penetration in the country.
