New broadband minister announced

Thursday 31st January 2008, by Daniel King

Broadband users may be interested to learn that their internet provider will now be monitored by Baroness Shriti Vadera.

The Baroness's new position as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Business and Competitiveness (lowercase) will involve her overseeing IT and communications within the UK, a task previously undertaken by Stephen Timms.

One of Baroness Vadera's targets will be the UK broadband infrastructure and the upgrading of the network nationwide, as her predecessor Mr Timms had spoken of the importance of high-speed broadband.

The Daily Telegraph described her as "one of Westminster's most controversial figures," with a "forceful" manner that led to her referring to Railtrack shareholders as "grannies".

A campaign by Ofcom has already been backed by the government, which warned that broadband providers could face legal consequences for misadvertising their online speeds.

Ofcom has threatened to establish a formal code to ensure customers are not misinformed, if they are not satisfied with the industry changes.
