New broadband supplier tax to be rolled out?
Wednesday 16th April 2008, by Daniel King
Broadband providers may have to pay a new tax, after Ofcom outlined proposals.
The move came as more broadband users now watch programmes made for television online, which has led to an investigation on funding, reports Teleappliant.
Ed Richards, chief executive of Ofcom, said: "Viewers still want a mix of high quality UK-made content, but the traditional television model is not enough to meet all their needs."
It has also been suggested that the BBC, which currently receives funding from television licenses, may have to cover the expanding costs for other channels.
Ofcom is investigating the situation and consulting industry officials, including broadband suppliers, with a further announcement expected to be made on June 19th.
Meanwhile, the BBC has announced that head of future media and technology Ashley Highfield is leaving his position to work on the development of on-demand video services for Channel 4, ITV and the BBC.
