New deal 'could be important to the future of broadband'

Avanti Communications Group has announced it will supply broadband products to a range of service providers across the UK - which could have a knock-on effect on national connectivity.
The company states contracts worth an estimated £400,000 will be implemented over the next two years for four different companies - Avonline, Broadbandwherever, Coview Solutions and KBR IT & Networking Solutions.
David Williams, chief executive of Avanti, said it was important for the group to continue to consolidate its place in Europe as the provider of a wide range of broadband solutions.
"Our wins in the UK are also important in the light of the British government's Digital Britain study," he added.
"When the final report is published in June, Avanti expects it to recommend the use of satellite to address the ten per cent of [the] UK population."
Mr Williams noted this particular group would traditionally not have access to the current range of wired services and that the company's growth could place them in a strong position to achieve such targets.
According to the Financial Times, the deal could mean good news for those in rural areas and customers in Ireland who have so far been unable to connect to high-speed internet services.
It reported that the firm would be working alongside Hutchison 3G Ireland to address this particular area and was an important move in helping the government realise its plans to have broadband available to everyone by 2012.
