New web security system available free

Broadband users concerned about internet security have been offered free access to a new anti-phishing and chat encryption solution which may allay their fears.

It was announced this week that BitDefender would make a version of its web protection suite available that can be downloaded directly, offering on-demand virus scanning as well as host of other facilities.

Although the free system is not able to offer real-time anti-virus defence, it can be used to investigate issues which may have been unknowingly placed on the computers hard drive and - for those who do require more advanced software - will be linked to other applications in the company's range.

These include BitDefender Antivirus 2009, Internet Security 2009 and Total Security 2009 - all of which the manufacturer claims provide systems with protection operating on an "always-on" basis.

However, those opting for the free version, the platform will provide virus scanning and removal, as well as a scheduler facility, the ability to check files and folders with a right click of the mouse, a quarantine option for isolating suspect files and a number of report options.

Bogdan Dumitru, chief technical officer of the firm, said the complimentary edition would be ideally suited to those who need a fast and effective way to analyse and remove most immediate threats.

"Many of today's anti-malware programs can't keep up with the speed and volume with which new malware is being released," he explained. "BitDefender Free Edition allows users to test and verify the effectiveness of their anti-malware solution."

The firm's Total Security 2009 suite also offers a PC tune-up feature, as well as data backup, anti-spam and a new gamer mode.
