Next-generation broadband 'not all about speed'

By Brian Palmer (Thu, 20th May 2010)

When it comes to broadband, it's easy to get worked up over speed.

After all, that's what most web surfers gauge their internet experience on, in my opinion.

However, this isn't too surprising, given all the research that's surfaced recently.

According to a study by Ofcom - the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries - which took place last year, the average 'up to' speed advertised by internet service providers (ISPs) was 7.1 Mb/s.

But it found the average broadband speed to actually be 4.1 Mb/s.

And if I was getting a much slower connection than I was paying for, I would talk about it a lot too!

However, a spokesman for the Internet Services Providers' Association (ISPA) thinks it's not all about a fast connection.

"In terms of speeds achieved, ISPA argues that Next-Generation Access should be measured in services that can be delivered over the internet, alongside specifying speed," he explained.

The representative went on to add: "The ISPA believes that getting access to public services on the internet is of major importance."

Furthermore, he explained it's important for the government to encourage investment in top-of-the-range internet and continue to create a competitive market in this area.

"In the small minority of areas where the market may not deliver, the ISPA would welcome government efforts to ensure that no one is digitally excluded," the spokesman noted.

So you think speed is the most important aspect of your broadband connection?
