NUT: Technology should be introduced at a young age
(Fri, 18th April 2008)
As the internet and broadband play an increasing role in the lives of young people, the National Union of Teachers (NUT) has commented on the introduction to technology to children.
However, there was a warning that computers should be used for more than games, which can have a limited benefit for young computer users.
Acting general secretary of the NUT Christine Blower commented: "It's important to introduce technology at an early age, it's actually what kind of technology kids use ... It should be introduced for a purpose and made fun, but also not allowing endless exposure to computers."
Parents considering purchasing broadband for the benefit of their children may be interested to know that industry watchdog Ofcom found 49 per cent of those aged eight to 17 had an online profile.
It was also noted that broadband was used to expand social circles, with 59 per cent of those in the same age group using social networking sites to make new friends and 33 per cent of parents saying they set no rules about the use of such websites.
