O2 'is fastest mobile broadband provider in London'

Wednesday 24th February 2010, by Daniel King

O2 has declared itself the provider of the fastest mobile broadband in London, while it is also the speediest network on which to download music across the UK.

In a survey commissioned by the telecommunications firm and SIRODA - the network specialist - O2 came out on top of a list of the fastest speeds enjoyed by people accessing the web via a mobile connection.

As of January 2010, the average time taken to load a page with an O2 connection was 1.7 seconds - more than 30 per cent faster than the slowest operator.

For downloading music, O2 was shown to be fastest in 12 of the UK's 20 key cities and was second-fastest in four more.

Derek McManus, chief technology officer at O2, says: "Our London customers are now seeing the benefits of the investment we made before Christmas, where we spent £30 million delivering 40 new sites.

"Outside London, where network quality is shown to be strong, we continue to scale our investment and have committed to deliver a further 1,500 new sites by the end of this year."

Simon Page, from SIRODA, claims the testing replicated actual user experiences, with data downloaded via mobile broadband from all operators at all times between 10:00 and 22:00 GMT from Monday to Sunday.

The tests were carried out over a 60-day period in 150 locations across the country.

People who wish to sign up to an O2 offer to enjoy free broadband for two months have until tomorrow (February 25th) to do so after the company pushed the deadline back from its original date of January 31st.
