O2 to roll out fibre broadband if conditions are right

Mobile phone operator O2 is considering introducing a 100 mbps home broadband service, it has emerged.
Following BT's announcement this week that it is planning to invest in a superfast broadband network connecting 40 per cent of the UK, O2 has said it is considering a fibre-to-the-home service.
But O2 said it would only invest in the technology if Ofcom changes the current regulations that require dominant networks to be available to competitors.
Failure to change the rules means that investment in fibre infrastructure would not be worthwhile, it argued.
A spokesperson for O2 told ZDNet.co.uk: "We need clear and unambiguous regulation in place before we start shelling out huge sums of money."
Cable operator Virgin Media will shortly offer a 50 mbps service and it is likely that a number of internet service providers will start to pressure Ofcom into making changes if competition in the market is to be viable.
