Ofcom: BBC not responsible for broadband costs
Monday 28th April 2008, by Daniel King
The cost of paying for the development of superfast broadband in the UK is not the responsibility of the BBC, according to the chief executive of Ofcom.
Ed Richards has spoken to MPs about the issue, which was raised after the popularity of the corporation's iPlayer service led to issued issues over broadband capacity.
However, when speaking to a session of politicians, Mr Richards said that, although placing the responsibility of the cost with content providers was an option, it was not what he thought would happen.
"I am not convinced myself that the right answer to that is to get the BBC to pay for the iPlayer," he said.
Calls for investment in the broadband system by institutions such as the BBC had come from Tiscali earlier in the year.
In Feburary, the broadband provider announced it was working with Guerilla Films to release video and content on demand through its online service.
