Ofcom enters fibre broadband debate

Ofcom enters fibre broadband debate Internet regulator Ofcom has stepped into the discussion about super-fast broadband by launching a consultation paper on the subject.

The consultation period, which will run until December, will probe ways to keep UK broadband services up to speed with those of other nations.

To cope with increasing bandwidth demands, along with a rapidly growing residential sector, the industry is toying with the idea of installing a nationwide fibre cable network, called Next Generation Access, which will increase download speeds.

Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards said: "Next Generation Access offers tremendous new opportunities for UK business and consumers and its potential impact on the economy is very significant. We want to ensure there are no barriers to investment and provide a clear regulatory environment which will help encourage investment."

In related news, BT retail manager Ian Livingstone added his voice to calls for super-fast broadband in an interview with the Financial Times.
