Ofcom proposes broadband simplification
Friday 16th November 2007, by Daniel King
Telecoms watchdog Ofcom has unveiled plans to simplify regulations concerning competition in the retail broadband market.
Ofcom is to start a consultation period focussing on regulatory obligations which broadband providers have to stick to, even if competition in that area is strong.
However, any plans to remove regulations will be area specific, with places where competition is weak - such as Hull - still subject to scrutiny. Ofcom also plans to help maintain the cheap broadband deals currently available to consumers.
A statement from Ofcom said: "The retail broadband market in the UK is already performing well, with healthy competition between a range of providers giving consumers choice. Broadband is available to 99.6 per cent of UK households and more than 80 per cent can choose between two or more wholesale providers."
Ofcom is currently looking over proposals to increase the overall download speeds of broadband connections across the UK.
