Offshore workers offered wireless broadband

Thursday 24th April 2008, by Daniel King

Offshore workers at Byford Dolphin are being offered wireless broadband, thanks to a new service from BT and Schlumberger.

BT has reported that a three-month trial on the North Sea rig has shown "unprecedented demand" for the wireless facility.

Schulemberger Information Solutions (SIS) installed the facility for the oil workers and vice president for digital infrastructure Demetrios Stellas commented on the service.

"We believe that this new service will be recognised as a real benefit by oil workers who often work in harsh and difficult environments both offshore and in frontier locations," he said.

BT Broadband customers who have inclusive Wi-Fi minutes as part of the BY FON community can use them on the offshore sites.

Meanwhile, BT has invited businesses around the country to become Wi-Fi hotspots for no cost - increasing the network of BT Openzone.

It was recently revealed by the broadband provider that seven per cent of businesses currently offer Wi-Fi to visitors.
