Older web users 'familiar with benefits of online bookings'

Older web users are increasingly turning to the internet to take advantage of the many options available for booking holidays and short breaks, it has been advised.
A spokeswoman for New Media Trend Watch, a group which monitors the tourism sector to keep those in the travel industry up to date with the latest developments, said broadband services are now familiar to all sorts of people.
Carmel Dennis, project manager at the group, explained adults aged 55 and over are now well aware of how the web can be used, as many have been introduced to it during their daily working lives.
She added this generation has also seen the flexibility and freedom that last minute online bookings represent - and as they are often not bound by constraints such as organised childcare or school term times, there are lots of opportunities for them to save time and money.
In addition, it was noted females appear to have emerged as the dominant sex when it comes to interacting with travel websites - but this was often the case when it came to organising such leisure time.
"Women were traditionally the key decision-makers in family holidays, so this is now reflected in the use of the internet for this purpose. It is also relatively easy to combine researching and booking holidays online with childcare or other family responsibilities," Ms Dennis concluded.
Her comments follow the publication of a new report from online tourism group IVRA Holding, which predicted more than half of all web-based holiday bookings will be made by female broadband users.
