Online catch-up 'not killing off traditional TV'
Wednesday 13th August 2008, by Daniel King
Online television catch-up services have not dented traditional TV viewing figures, a new report has revealed.
Thinkbox, the UK's commercial TV marketing body, found that BBC iPlayer, ITV.com, Sky Player and 4oD are actually adding to viewing figures.
According to Thinkbox, online and traditional broadcasting platforms are growing together.
The trend can be attributed to the different needs of audiences. Online services tend to be used as a means of catching up with missed programmes.
"That both broadcast and online TV platforms are growing simultaneously underlines how they fulfill different needs for viewers and that they can co-exist and indeed promote each other," said a spokesperson for Thinkbox.
BBC iPlayer, for example, offers seven-day catch-up television, radio 'listen again' and live streaming.
The broadcaster is now looking into how it can offer the service on a range of platforms including cable and mobile.
