Online radio 'economics unworkable'

Broadband users who enjoy online radio could soon be aware of the effects of high licence royalty fees, which have already resulted in Pandora ending broadcast to British web users.
Speaking in reaction to the news, Christian Ward from Last.fm emphasised the importance of internet radio in music promotion but that a new solution needs to be arranged between the stations, artists and labels as current fees are too high.
Mr Ward also explained that social networking sites will play a large part in the future of the music industry, a fact that he believes should be embraced.
"The music industry needs to look at every conceivable revenue stream and promotional opportunity, whether thats mobile, social networks, web radio or the innovative new start-up coming out of some kid's bedroom," he said.
Greater access to broadband means that fans will be more empowered, rather then the decisions being driven by the industry, according to Mr Ward.
