Online retail 'sees return of consumer confidence'

A new survey has looked at how broadband users are interacting with online retails stores and has concluded that it would appear some consumer confidence is returning to the market.

The research, put together by industry analysts at IMRG and Capgemini, showed that people in the UK spent around £4.2 billion using the internet last month - a figure that was noted to be up by 15.7 per cent on June.

In addition, it was noted year-on-year figures had also proved more people were taking advantage of their broadband packages to access the best deals - with totals up by 16.8 per cent on July last year.

Mike Petevinos, head of consulting for retail for Capgemini UK, explained that much of the growth appears to be in the number of consumers shopping for clothing and electrical goods - something which was reflective of the individual sectors' attempts to win over the public with "better product information, visual merchandising and delivery methods".

Tina Spooner, director of information at IMRG, added: "It is evident that online merchants are becoming more sophisticated in their marketing efforts and email communications to their customers, the result of which can be seen in higher conversion rates,"

In terms of the clothing, footwear and accessories sector, increases in sales numbers were recorded as 18 per cent month on month, while the year-on-year figure was revealed as 17 per cent higher.

In other news, a survey conducted by Hitwise this week revealed that websites like Cricinfo, SkySports.com and the BBC Sport portal were enjoying a greater number of hits recently thanks to England's performance in the Ashes.
