Retailers are in for a festive treat this Christmas after new research has shown that online sales in the UK could rise by as much as 43 per cent this year due to a rise in broadband connections.
A study of online shopping trends in the UK, Germany and France by comScore found that 62 per cent of all shoppers said that they would spend at least the same amount as they did last year.
However, for online shopping, all three countries saw a large percentage of respondents say that they would spend more or the same online as they did last year. In the UK, only 13 per cent said that they would spend less online than they did in the run up to Christmas 2006.
Bob Ivins, comScore's executive vice president of international markets, said: "The popularity of online shopping is set to reach an all-time high this year, as time squeezed consumers - armed with high speed access and experience with the online channel - can be expected to spend more time shopping and buying Christmas gifts online."
Further research from comScore has found that overall e-commerce figures in the US have risen 19 per cent since 2006.
