Online xmas shopping trends revealed

Tuesday 15th January 2008, by Daniel King

Broadband users who shopped online over Christmas were following a popular trend, according to figures released by the comScore World Metrix.

The statistics show that online shopping in the UK rose 38 per cent on the average year-round figures, although Germany showed a slower rate of internet sales.

"The typical pattern we note in all countries, including the US, is that online retail activity peaks in mid-December as consumers have to allow time for shipping and delivery of their purchases in most categories," explained EVP for comScore European markets Bob Ivins.

The leading website was Amazon in the UK, which attracted nine per cent of the average share of visits to online retail sites, followed by Apple with six per cent.

The trend continued, as research from Hitwise showed that the amount of UK customers looking for online post-Christmas bargains tripled from the same period in 2006.
