Opera study looks at wireless web use

Tuesday 25th August 2009, by Daniel King

A new study has looked at the amount of people who are now using wireless mobile broadband technology to access the web all over the world.

Conducted by experts at Opera, a company which provides alternative browsing software for use with portable and fixed-line internet facilities, it was noted 29.1 million people went online using its Mini package in July.

This total reflected over 12 billion individual page views during the month - which was advised as up by 15.4 per cent on June and 223 per cent year-on-year.

Opera Mini were also found to have taken advantage of up to 187 million MB of data across all global networks in July, an increase of 11 per cent on the month beforehand.

A spokesman for the company said it was clear that wireless broadband activity was something that had now well and truly entered the mainstream with more intensive use being seen across the globe.

Jon von Tetzchner, chief executive officer for Opera, explained that the Mini browsing software was an ideal vehicle for helping people get online and join others who are now surfing more sites than ever.

"If we want the web to be available to everyone, we need a solution that can work on almost every phone. That was why we originally made Opera Mini. And so far, the world has responded. We continue to be humbled by that response," he concluded.

Earlier this month, the company announced the launch of the beta 3 version of the Opera 10 browser - which it claimed offers greater stability and performance for heavy web users.
