Orange announces new Wikimedia deal

Thursday 23rd April 2009, by Daniel King

Orange has announced a new partnership to provide mobile internet and broadband users access to a range of new information portals.

As part of a new initiative with the Wikimedia Foundation - which the network claims is the very first of its kind - the company will create a series of co-branded facilities accessible through the firm's various online platforms.

It is claimed by Orange that with data from comScore in February this year suggesting it had an audience of 55 million unique visitors per month to its sites, the deal could be beneficial for both parties, as well as its own customers.

Broadband and mobile web users in France, the UK, Spain and Poland will be the first to see the new Wikimedia Foundation content and it is expected that some of the facilities made available will relate to the company's most well-known product, Wikipedia.

In addition, Orange will develop a number of widgets to provide fast access to information and services for both fixed-line broadband users and those with portable net-enabled devices.

Paul-Francois Fournier, executive vice-president of Orange's audience line of business, said the partnership would provide greater access to a wide range of information systems and simplify the way in which people use this technology.

"By bringing our customers a new way to access content from Wikipedia - one of the world's most recognised and popular internet brands - we are delivering on this commitment," he added.

Also this week, a poll by the broadband and mobile provider revealed The Godfather was the favoured film choice of more than 900 UK business managers.
