Phorm 'could be a good thing'

(Wednesday, 30th April 2008)

Broadband consumers who are concerned about the security implications concerning the use of Phorm could be interested in the positive reaction it got from the news editor of Web-User magazine.

Ben Camm-Jones commented on the service, which would offer targeted marketing to broadband users based on their browsing habits, in conjunction with the consumer's internet service providers.

He addressed the issues which had been causing concern - such as how much information will be stored by the company - but commented on the potential positives of such a service.

"If the system works as they say it will then it will probably be quite a good thing for the web and for advertising in general," said Mr Camm-Jones, explaining it could offer useful, relevant adverts.

However, organisations such as the Foundation for Information Policy Research has criticised the potential use of Phorm, branding it invasive and illegal.
