Reading online 'the choice for teens'

Thursday 27th March 2008, by Daniel King

The importance of broadband to teenagers has been highlighted in a new report, Read Up, Fed Up, which showed that most prefer to read websites instead of novels.

It was revealed that those aged 11 to 14 preferred reading celebrity magazines, online song lyrics and blogs and fan fiction, as well as computer game cheat tips and websites such as BBC Online.

Honor Wilson-Fletcher, director of the National Year of Reading, told the Guardian: "Young people are web natives - exposed to a wider variety of reading material than any previous generation through the explosion of digital media."

Books did feature in the top ten loved reads, with Harry Potter, Anne Frank's Diary of a Young Girl and Anthony Horowitz all appearing below online and popular magazines.

The power of broadband was also shown as MP Jo Swinson called for clips of Westminster debates to be shown on YouTube, in order to reconnect with the public, reported the BBC.
