Report: Broadband uptake growing strongly in Ireland
Friday 14th December 2007, by Daniel King
The take-up of broadband services is seeing significant growth in Ireland, a new report has suggested.
According to advisory board Forfas, broadband subscriber levels in the nation soared by 90 per cent in 2007, reaching nearly 700,000 users at the end of June.
The report also suggests that these broadband connections could be improved, however. Forfas chief executive Martin Cronin noted that the maximum speed available is currently 6Mbps, with services costing up to five times more than faster ones in other countries.
"Optimum development of the enterprise sector and of e-business in Ireland will require a wider range of higher speed broadband services to be available," he added.
The report comes during an ongoing debate over the possibility of ultra-fast broadband services becoming a reality in the UK.
Forfas was established in 1994 and is the national policy and advisory board for the areas of enterprise, trade, science, technology and innovation in Ireland.
