Report highlights current broadband threats
Thursday 28th May 2009, by Daniel King
A new report has been published that highlights the number of threats broadband users face in terms of malware and virus programs.
Network Box, an internet analysis group and managed security services provider, issued its most recent study this week and suggested the number of attacks was on the rise.
Both spam and malware were noted as having increased during this month with volumes for the former up by an estimated 27.7 per cent and the latter seeing an increase of 28.7 per cent on April's figures.
It was also explained that the UK is now responsible for around three per cent of the malware currently featured on the web - a figure that has increased from under two per cent last month.
Simon Heron, a spokesman for the organisation behind the research, said there were some positives to take from the report, but it was still essential for broadband users to protect themselves and stay vigilant.
"The growth in internet threats has slowed slightly from the massive 63 per cent we saw last month, but clearly - in terms of volumes - spam and malware are still rising significantly."
He added the US and Korea are still playing a big role in contributing to the number of threats out there - as the research revealed these countries now account for 17.2 and six per cent of the global threat respectively.
A spokesman for Websense advised this week many IT professionals were taking unnecessary risks with security by engaging with web 2.0 services.
