Report predicts sharp rise in mobile broadband

Report predicts sharp rise in mobile broadband The number of mobile broadband subscribers around the world will top 5.2 billion by 2011, a new report has claimed.

According to Infonetics Research, cellular mobile broadband subscribers are forecast to grow by a compound year-on-year rate of 104 per cent by that year.

This trend will be driven by a proliferation of voice services in large emerging markets like India and China.

The analyst also predicted that there will be one mobile broadband subscriber for every four wireline broadband subscribers in three years' time.

Also revealed in the study is the finding that the number of mobile subscribers increased by 31 per cent in 2007.

"Subscribers in Brazil, Russia and later this year China, are migrating to 3G, which in turn will lead to a 2G and 2.5G to 3G subscriber migration process in 2008," said Stephane Teral, principal analyst at Infonetics Research.

Recent research by Analysys Mason indicated that 2.1 billion wireless broadband customers will generate more than £400 billion in service revenue by 2015.
