'Rise of the silver surfer' continues

More age ranges may be taking full advantage of broadband services to access the products and services they need, if the results of a recent study are to be believed.

Conducted by experts at Just Retirement, a company which specialises in providing equity release packages and other financial assistance to older people, it was found that this target demographic was logging on in increasing numbers.

The study looked at consumers in the 60 to 70-year-old age bracket and revealed nearly half of these were using email on a regular basis and around two-thirds were now utilising online retail outlets.

It explained that this was proof that the number of silver surfers now getting to grips with broadband was on the rise.

Nigel Barlow, head of research at Just Retirement, commented that it was only a matter of time before this particular section of the public would catch up with the younger generation.

However, he added that one of the most interesting parts of the report was how much these web users were prepared to read up on products and services before parting with their money.

"Although no system is 100 per cent safe, online security is constantly improving we are confident that the third generation will eventually endorse the internet as a means to manage their personal finances moving forward," Mr Barlow concluded.

Just Retirement was the winner of Best Provider of annuities at the Financial Adviser Life & Pensions Awards 2009.
