Satellites in space 'are the way forward in creating super-fast broadband'

Thursday 18th February 2010, by Daniel King

Investment in space technology is the key to achieving significantly faster broadband speeds, according to an expert.

Richard Peckham, chairman of UKspace, believes that governments and associations with a serious intention of creating the quickest browsing speeds on offer must increase the capacity of satellites.

This would allow them to store an increased amount of data - such as that from the most popular websites and online applications - and make the lag time when beaming back information much smaller.

Mr Peckham says: "It's going to be step by step but that's the trend, putting more computation up there and more storage up there and then you can start to put the more frequently used pages and things up there.

"It's going to be a gradual move up there so we'll know more in five to ten years."

He suggests starting by putting the most regularly used websites on satellites, before adopting the technology for all online platforms.

Creating ultrafast broadband via satellites would be done in a similar way to current television production, Mr Peckham states.

The industry has already begun putting computer systems on satellite which can deal with telecommunications, such as internet.

The entire space market is predicted by the Space Innovation and Growth Strategy to be worth approximately £400 billion by 2030, with the UK's plan already in place to try and capture some ten per cent of this.

If successful, space - and the data stored there - could be responsible for more than 100,000 jobs in the UK within two decades, the strategy suggests.
