Scilly Isles 'have highest broadband take-up rates'
Monday 30th July 2007, by Daniel King
The Isles of Scilly have been shown to have the highest take-up rates of asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) broadband in England by recent findings.
A study conducted by broadband provider BT has found that almost half of all homes and businesses on the islands have ASDL access, switching to the broadband service faster than any other English county.
Cornwall was found to have the second highest take-up rate, while Oxfordshire was in third place.
BTs west of England regional manager, Michael Dunn, said: "Who would have thought when ADSL broadband was introduced that relatively remote and rural areas such as Cornwall, Somerset and even the Isles of Scilly would have featured among the leaders?"
He added that broadband was contributing in a big way to the success of local communities economically.
BT recently reported the addition of 175,000 new customers in the three-month period to the end of June, maintaining its position as the UK's largest broadband provider.
