Silver surfers 'increasingly adopting broadband'
Monday 30th July 2007, by Daniel King
The majority of European internet users aged over 55 now have a broadband connection, findings have shown.
According to a study by the European Interactive Advertising Association (EIAA), 68 per cent of the over 55s now connect to the net through broadband access, while internet adoption among this age group is growing faster than within any other.
The average broadband take-up rate of a European internet user is 14 per cent, but silver surfers now have an adoption level of 26 per cent, the report shows.
Nearly one in five silver surfers said that they visited social networking sites at least once a month and admitted to spending an average of 8.8 hours per week online.
Alison Fennah, executive director of the EIAA, said: "It is interesting to see the effect that increased broadband penetration is having on how silver surfers are communicating and spending their leisure time."
The Online Publishers Association recently claimed that silver surfers were becoming the fastest growing demographic group, website AllAfrica.com reports.
