Slowdown in broadband subscribers reported

Wednesday 16th January 2008, by Daniel King

There are now 328.8 million broadband subscribers around the world, according to new research by analysts Point Topic.

However, the study showed that this was only an increase of 4.72 per cent in the last quarter, down from 5.16 per cent increase in the second quarter of 2007.

The area with the highest number of subscribers was south and east Asia, with 3.9 million new users although 90 per cent of those were in China.

"Western Europe added the second highest number of new subscribers in the regional chart with 3.5 million, due mainly to strong numbers in Germany, UK, France, Italy and Spain," explained Point Topic in a statement.

Meanwhile, subscribers in Australia could benefit from calls from PIPE networks to increase download limits in unlimited packages to 100GB or 200GB from the standard 20BG plans.

PC Authority reports that the introduction of Pipe Pacific Cable 1, a new link between Australia to the US and Asia, has led to government predictions of faster broadband speeds.
