Software giants square up over Web 2.0

(Wed, 18th April 2007)

Adobe and Microsoft are going head-to-head with competing Web 2.0 rich media applications.

Currently Adobe leads the market with its Flash player, which facilitates rich web content such as moving images, web-based video players and slideshow applications.

But with the launch of Silverlight, which has been in production from 2005, Microsoft is hoping to enter the market.

The program will feature as a plug-in for internet browsers such as Microsoft's internet explorer, Mozilla's Firefox and Apple's Safari. The main advantage of the program is that content can be played on any format from small mobile screen to high definition TVs without the need for recoding.

Bob Muglia, senior vice president of the server and tools business at Microsoft, said: "Silverlight is the only solution in the market today that enables content creators to tap into the broad ecosystem for Windows Media technologies while taking the web's rich interactive application experience to new levels."

Meanwhile, Adobe has revealed details of a novel new media player that allows users to view high quality videos both online and offline.

The Adobe Media Player will allow businesses to collect information about what customers are watching and its creators claim that content providers will be able to monetise content more easily.
