Somerset leads ADSL broadband take-up

Monday 21st January 2008, by Daniel King

BT has announced that Somerset has the highest take-up rate of high-speed ADSL broadband, as reported in the Yeovil Express.

It is thought that over 47 per cent of Somerset homes and businesses are connected with ADSL, with 37.8 per cent of the south-west as a whole using the connection, compared to a national average of 29.9 per cent.

BT's regional director for the south-west Sally Wilcox said: "This is a fantastic achievement for Somerset. It shows that many of the county's people and businesses are switched on to the great benefits offered by high-speed broadband."

Connecting Somerset is a funded initiative offering IT advice for the county, including the recent provision of grants to help with setting up businesses websites and improving business internet solutions.

Although the grant scheme has now ended, the service still offers guidance and training for Somerset businesses and consumers.
