A new study has highlighted the fact employers are recognising how portable devices and mobile internet provides a cost-effective solution for business.
The Future Mobile Enterprise: Forecasts, Markets & Devices 2009-2014 report, which is put together by Juniper Research and can be downloaded from its website, shows "unwired enterprise" is on the rise.
It notes a number of firms are being turned on to the efficiency, productivity and functionality that give staff access to such communications tools provides.
The research estimates that by the year 2014 revenues generated from the use of mobile enterprise solutions could grow to as much as $284 billion (£195 billion).
However, it is also noted there are a number of hurdles that still remain for some companies when it comes to issuing mobile phones and laptops enabled with wireless web technology.
Report author Andrew Kitson said this particular problem is something that can be overcome with the right approach by the employers themselves.
"Enterprises need to be assured of total control over the devices their employees use. To do this, they need to limit the types and numbers of devices connecting to their networks," he added.
Mr Kitson added deactivating gadgets that get lost or stolen is also something that minimises risk and authentication, while content encryption technology can protect data in the first instance.
David Emms, senior technology consultant at Kaspersky Lab, also highlighted the issue of network security this week, stating such moves were "common sense".
