Superfast broadband 'is an absolute must' for UK economy

Friday 6th February 2009, by Daniel King

The delivery of next-generation broadband to businesses and households across the UK is "an absolute must" if the country is to develop its digital economy, an expert has claimed.

Dr Chris Doyle, associate at the centre for management under regulation at Warwick Business School, stressed that faster broadband speeds are "essential" to greater growth and productivity in Britain.

Speaking at the Joint Westminster eForum & Westminster Media Forum keynote seminar: Digital Britain, he said this would help the country to "embrace the digital future" and sustain its knowledge economy.

"It is taken as a prerequisite, a given, that we must encourage, where possible, further development and help the markets deliver the services," he stated.

While Dr Doyle acknowledged that the government may not wish to help fund the rollout of next-generation services, he suggested that it could play a significant role in ensuring it is made available by "providing a helping hand on occasion".

Communications minister Lord Carter's Digital Britain report outlined a string of recommendations for the future of technology and internet services, including the development of universal broadband and next-generation networks.

This is likely to come as a major boost to many businesses across the UK, who could take advantage of converged communications to gain a competitive edge and improve the efficiency of their operations.

Dr Doyle added that this technology would open up "a wealth of applications" for both consumers and commercial users that would be available to access from anywhere in the country.
