Super-fast broadband review announced

Super-fast broadband review announced

(Tuesday, 26th February 2008)

A government review of super-fast broadband has been announced by the business minister Baroness Shriti Vadera, which could mean greater investment in the industry.

The review will be undertaken by the ex-chief executive of Cable & Wireless Francesco Caio and will report on the barriers currently facing broadband roll-out, including whether public sector investment is required.

Baroness Vadera commented: "We must be ready to respond to future technological developments, which will place unprecedented challenges for our communications networks over the coming decade."

It is believed that the findings of the investigation will be reported in the autumn, when the potential for private investment in technologies such as 4G will be revealed, or whether the lack of immediate returns could require public sector intervention.

4G, or fourth-generation communications system, is described by Wikipedia as the "next step in wireless communications" - designed to increase broadband speeds and availability.
