Super-fast broadband 'will be key'

Tuesday 27th November 2007, by Daniel King

The development and rollout of super-fast broadband access in the UK has been discussed at a recent summit.

Involving figures from some of the UK's biggest telecommunications firms, the broadband summit brought together businesses, the government and regulators to look at the future of broadband.

The summit concluded with the agreement to come up with a vision statement to help plan ultra-fast broadband services in the UK, which looks set to result in super-fast broadband pilots taking place.

"In this age of information sharing and knowledge, communications systems lie at the heart, underpinning everything that we do," commented competitiveness minister Stephen Timms.

"If we delay in putting this new network into place, it could be a barrier to the future success of our economy."

He also welcomed Virgin Media's intention to launch 50 Mbps broadband next year and expressed the hope that other internet service providers will follow suit in the future.

According to recent research by Point Topic, average downstream broadband speeds saw an increase in western Europe during the third quarter of 2007.
