Super-fast H20 to be rolled out

Wednesday 23rd January 2008, by Daniel King

Bournemouth, Northampton or Dundee will be the first to get super-fast fibre technology broadband, reports the BBC.

The service could offer speeds of up to 100 megabits per second and will be provided by fibre company H20, which is running the service through existing sewers.

H20's development comes after BT announced in 2007 that is was developing fibre technology at Ebbsfleet with a service due to commence in August 2008.

Mr Thomas, spokesperson for H20, explained one of the advantages the new technology has over traditional broadband.

"While deploying traditional fibre over a two-kilometre area would be six to 12 months in the planning. We can do it in four hours," he said.

The company has developed the Fibre Optical Cable Underground Sewer System, claiming to be the only company in Europe offering "innovative deployment systems with a combination of neutral dark fibre links".

H20 recently announced the appointment of David Elliot as the regional sales manager for Scotland, part of the firm's expanding operations north of the border.
