Talk Talk Group 'performing well' despite downturn

The Carphone Warehouse has announced its broadband telecommunications division is performing well despite the current economic climate.

As part of its 2008 fourth quarter trading update - which was published earlier this week - the company said Talk Talk had been able to bring in around 74,000 new subscribers during the period.

It noted this pushed its customer base for broadband provision up to 2.8 million and that overall this was a "significant improvement" on the rest of last year.

The firm explained its performance was reflective of the typically strong first calendar quarter and had been boosted by improvements to its marketing strategies and value propositions.

AOL's Broadband base was reported to have declined by 23,000 and the Carphone Warehouse saw its year end with 2.2 million unbundled customers - which it claimed makes TalkTalk Group "easily the largest unbundler in the UK".

Charles Dunstone, chief executive officer of the organisation, said he was pleased with the overall results and they matched what the company had expected to see when added to its totals for 2008.

"Our broadband business has shown strong progress, reflecting higher gross adds, lower churn and continued operational improvements. Our value proposition is clearly resonating with customers," he added.

Last year, the Carphone Warehouse became the only independent retailer to stock the Apple iPhone 3G when it went on sale in the UK. In addition to the firm's broadband offerings, its mobile phone business was also reported to have had a positive year.
