TalkTalk spokesman: 'broadband speed still a hot topic'

TalkTalk has spoken about various changes being planned for UK broadband users to get the whole of the country up to the same speed.
Last month, the government published its Digital Britain report, which looked at the many things that were being implemented to improve internet access in the UK and this has generated much debate since it was released.
In an article for the telecommunications service provider's official blog this week, senior director of products and alliances at the TalkTalk Group Sylvain Thevenot adds that much of this discussion has centred around achieving a universal network speed of 2 MB before 2012.
This, he states is proof that attaining faster broadband connections is clearly still one of the most important things to consumers and businesses in the UK and since the publication of the report, a number of sector commentators have suggested this proposed upgrade will still be too slow.
"After all, plenty of broadband customers already get faster speeds than this. And if we were to compare that to the speeds available in other countries, 2 MB broadband would put us way behind countries like South Korea, Japan, France and Germany," Mr Thevenot added.
He goes on to say that there are a number of factors that contribute towards how fast a home broadband connection can be and says distance from the nearest exchange is just one of these. However, the expert concludes that TalkTalk is currently working on ways to resolve these and may already have some services which could help - such as a Turbo Boost option.
The Digital Britain report was published on June 16th.
