Teenager held over virtual theft

A teenager from the Netherlands has been arrested for stealing furniture from rooms in a virtual social networking site.

The 17-year-old is accused of stealing virtual furniture from rooms on the Habbo Hotel 3D site which had been paid for with real money, the BBC reports.

Police in the country have also questioned five 15-year-olds over the theft, which had a total value of €4,000 (£2,840). The teenagers have been accused of stealing the furniture and then placing it in their own Habbo rooms.

A spokesman for Sulake, the company that operates Habbo Hotel, told the BBC: "The accused lured victims into handing over their Habbo passwords by creating fake Habbo websites. In Habbo, as in many other virtual worlds, scamming for other people's personal information such as user names has been problematic for quite a while."

Habbo Hotel was started in 2000 and now has over 82 million avatars.
