Twitter '22 times more popular than a year ago'

The last year has seen traffic to online micro blogging site Twitter increase 22-fold, according to a recent Hitwise study.
It was noted by the industry analysts, the service grew rapidly over the a 12-month period to attain the position of the fifth most-visited social networking portal in the UK for May.
The group said the figures place Twitter - which counts a number of celebrity users such as Transformers star Megan Fox among its subscribers - as the 38th most popular website in Britain.
By comparison, Hitwise said its position the same time last year was 84th and 969th respectively, with the vast majority of its growth (93 per cent) occurring in the first five months of this year.
Despite the numbers being impressive, the company claimed mobiles and third party applications - or software services collating messages and data for users rather than them having to visit the site itself - are not even taken into consideration, making the phenomena all the more surprising.
However, it also explained that although Twitter "has proven to be a fantastic source of traffic for content-driven sites", it is largely underperforming as an advertising and marketing tool.
"Given that Twitter has yet to settle on a business model that will take advantage of its huge, loyal user base, this is an issue that needs to be addressed by the people that run the company if they are to make the service a financial as well as popular success," it concluded.
Other famous users of the micro-blogging portal include UK TV personalities Jonathan Ross and Stephen Fry, as well as Hollywood directors Jon Favreau and David Lynch.
