UK broadband penetration 'will top 60% by 2012'

Monday 28th July 2008, by Daniel King

The UK and 16 other countries are expected to exceed 60 per cent broadband penetration by 2012, according to new research from Gartner.

In fact, global broadband connections are set to increase from 323 million to 499 million by that year.

Some markets are even expected to reach 80 per cent broadband penetration or higher by 2012.

Countries whose governments are actively investing in broadband infrastructure are likely to develop a lead in this area, according to Gartner.

"Broadband penetration will increase, especially in the geographically larger markets," remarked analyst Amanda Sabia.

Newer technologies like wireless broadband will attract new subscribers, she added.

Earlier this month, BroadbandChoices.co.uk urged the UK government to invest in a next-generation network because individual internet service providers cannot sustain the cost.
