UK firm launches 50Mbps broadband for businesses

UK companies could benefit from two new broadband services aimed specifically at business users.
Exponential-e, a UK provider of next-generation ethernet connectivity, is offering two deals that are both based on fibreoptic networks.
This allows firms to benefit from faster speeds and improved reliability compared to DSL connections, and could help give small and medium businesses (SMBs) a competitive edge.
Power NGN 25, which starts from £550 a month, allows customers to make the most of 25Mbps of uncontended broadband, while the £650 Power NGN 50 offers speeds of up to 50 Mbps.
Lee Wade, managing director at Exponential-e, said the latest packages come in response to clients seeking "a business class fibre-based solution at lower bandwidths".
He revealed that the firm's significant network investment has allowed it to focus on the development of cost-competitive solutions designed specifically for the SMB market.
"Our dedicated focus on the business market means we can be single-minded in engineering our network for our customers' needs," Mr Wade commented.
"They are not being asked to pay for the triple play needs of the residential consumer market."
Mr Wade added that the launch would be followed by further "extensive work" to increase its network presence across the UK, with the firm "optimistic" about its fortunes in 2009.
According to David Evans, head of government relations at the British Computer Society, the deployment of next-generation infrastructure across the UK could transform many businesses in the country.
Speaking at the Westminster eForum and Westminster Media Forum keynote seminar: Digital Britain, he claimed optical fibre development could be "akin to the railways" in its significance to the UK economy.
