UK is better than the US for broadband, report shows

Thursday 22nd July 2010, by Daniel King

It is not often that the UK learns it does something better than the US but a new report has revealed that our broadband customers benefit from better services than our trans-Atlantic cousins.

Recently-released data from market research specialist Strategy Analytics has revealed that the UK ranked higher than the States on the firm's latest Broadband Composite Index.

However, the report also showed that both nations have some way to go before they are considered to be among the world's best.

In fact the UK and the US were in no danger of bothering anyone in the top ten, being ranked 22nd and 23rd respectively.

The report, which features 57 countries across the globe, measures broadband development according to five categories.

Individual nations are scored on household penetration, speed, affordability, value for money and urbanicity.

According to Strategy Analytics, subjecting the nations to these tests provides a "more balanced and robust view of broadband development".

Ben Piper, director of the Strategy Analytics Multiplay Market Dynamics service and author of the report, said: "The traditional single metric approach of looking at broadband is becoming less relevant.

"We feel confident that our multifactor index is a superior indicator of a country's relative broadband advancement."

The report showed that South Korea has the best broadband services based on the five categories, followed by Hong Kong, Holland, Lithuania and Japan.

Singapore (9th), France (12th) and Germany (15th) were among the other nations to boast better service than the UK.

The results could inspire a number of UK broadband customers to search for a better deal to ensure that while the country is apparently lacking overall, they can benefit from the best deal on the market.
