UK must act now to improve broadband, say businesses

The UK must act now to improve its broadband services and boost the national economy, it has been claimed.
According to the Communications Management Association (CMA), the rollout of high-performance and universal broadband is vital to the future of British businesses.
The group's latest survey revealed that more than half of the companies in the UK were keen to adopt an SDSL service, but had found that it was unavailable in their area.
Furthermore, almost 95 per cent of businesses surveyed claimed that Britain needs to provide better communications infrastructure in every part of the country to recover its place among the top ten broadband nations.
CMA chief executive Glenn Powell said the results showed that the plans outlined in last month's Digitial Britain report must be pushed forward with increased urgency.
"We welcome the measures proposed in Lord Stephen Carter's report which we believe, if implemented, will enable British companies to remain competitive in the current tough economic climate," he stated.
The findings also revealed that more UK companies are now turning to mobile services as part of their business practices, with more than 80 per cent citing connected handheld devices as a "key factor" in their operations.
As a result, 64 per cent also reported a rise in the number of mobile workers.
The study comes after the GSM Association claimed that the continued development of mobile broadband could play "a unique role" in stimulating business growth and activity, helping to "pull our economies out of the current slump".
