UK 'will be a broadband world leader'

Wednesday 17th June 2009, by Daniel King

Gordon Brown has stressed his determination to ensure the UK receives enough investment in broadband technologies to put it ahead of services available in other countries.

In an article posted this week for the Times, the prime minister said it was essential for the digital infrastructure of Britain to be "world class", as this will contribute towards society in a number of areas.

He explained that in addition to being a useful tool for education and leisure, the internet represented a facility for helping Britain endure difficult economic times - such as those we are now experiencing.

Mr Brown went on to say the UK is a nation which has a great deal of products and services in the international market and boosting web technology could mean the creative and communications sectors are even more successful.

However, he added the responsibility to provide such a future did not lie solely with broadband providers or networking firms.

"In our fibre optic and cable networks - which will provide the next generation of superfast broadband - the government must also complement and assist the private sector to move farther and faster," the former chancellor sad.

Such an emphasis needs to be placed on better services, he concluded, as businesses large and small " need access to both fixed and mobile high-standard, high-speed networks".

The prime ministers comments came following the publication of the government's Digital Britain report this week, which looked at how modern technology can benefit the nation as a whole.
